Chimney repointing is one of the most commonly needed — and most commonly incorrectly specified — roofing maintenance jobs on Winchester period properties.
Chimney mortar is the bond between the bricks of the stack. Over time, it weathers, carbonates and loses adhesive strength. Repointing removes failed mortar to a depth of 15–20mm and fills the joints with new mortar, restoring the structural integrity and weather resistance of the stack.
Chimneys that are not repointed in time develop progressively worsening mortar loss, allowing water to penetrate the brick core. The single most important specification decision in Winchester chimney repointing is the mortar type. Victorian and Edwardian Winchester properties — the terraces of Hyde and Fulflood, the villas of St Giles Hill, the 1930s semis of Weeke and Chandler's Ford — were built with lime mortar. The bricks are relatively soft and porous. Portland cement mortar is significantly harder than these bricks.
When cement is used to repoint a lime-built chimney, the thermal movement of the stack cannot be absorbed by the rigid cement joint. The stress transfers to the brick face, causing the surface to spall — flake and break away. This damage is irreversible and is visible on dozens of Winchester period chimneys where cement was used in post-war and 1970s–80s repoints.

Lime mortar requires 48–72 hours protection from frost after application. We monitor forecasts and postpone where frost is expected. The correct approach is to survey all elements of the chimney in a single visit before quoting: mortar joints, step flashings, soakers, back gutter, front apron, and pot cowls.
